I have tried for the last month to find a sound card that will be compatible with my RedHat 7.X system. I currently bought a Ensonqi 1370 card , which I am unable to get to work with the sndconfig. It will recognize the card but fail at the sound test.
Is there any affordable PCI soundcards that will work with this linux distro?
Thanks!

the red hat hardware compatibility list (http://hardware.redhat.com/hcl/genpage2.cgi) shows a bunch of cards as "easy to install"
look throught the list and compare prices at www.pricewatch.com (http://www.pricewatch.com) or your favorite online store
good luck!
and have a nice day! :)

I have a SoundBlaster Live! Value, which I think is about $50 US (or less, not too sure). It works great under all the distros I've used (redhat 7 autodetected and installed it when I installed the OS). I would recommend this card. It's really nice.

I've got a Turtle Beach Montego II. It uses the Aureal Vortex 2 chipset. There are small problems, but it is very easy to get set up. ie. download the drivers, unzip and untar, type make install, and listen to all my lovely sounds. :)

I have a SB128 PCI, with the ESS1370 chispset and it is working fine with Linux. I used it in Mandrake (with sndconfig), Slackware and now Debian.
Maybe you should try a bit more rather than buy a new one (well, except if $$ are burning a hole in you pocket).

Sure it is not the 1371? They often get confused.

I have a Toshiba Laptop w/ the Yamaha? OPL3Sx chipset. When I first installed RH 7.1 on my system I had a hard time getting it configured in sndconfig. I would run the exact settings I used to in RH 6.2 and 7.0, but I would get an "error opening /dev/audio." I finally just tried a bunch of the other configurations listed in the sndconfig list. I eventually got my card to run, by trial and error and a few lock ups, w/ a completly different configuration. Why? I don't know, but if your willing to try, experiment w/ some of the other setups.
