Specs:
RedHat 7, 2.2.16; SB Live! Value; US Robotics model 005687-03; Voodoo3 2000. First let me say that I got Linux from Linux 7 for Dummies (LdF). This book works 98% out of Gnome (if some one could tell me how to get to the prompt without using a terminal, the equivilant to restarting in DOS mode, please tell me), where as the LfD second edition works mostly out of the CLI, and neither book is very good for troubleshooting (i.e. if you're following the book trying to do something, and your computer doesn't react the way the book says it should react, you're pretty much screwed, on your own to find out the answers). Next, I can't find any specifics on my modem. It was given to me by my brother with no documentation, but he claimed it to be a non-"winmodem". Although it's under COM 3 in Windows (perhaps due to jumper settings, but I don't which ones to change... heck, I don't even know which jumpers are which jumpers since there's no documentation anywhere on the net (not even the US Robotics site)). Gnome can't find it at all. Next my sound card. When I use sndconfig, I can hear the almighty voice, but might jumbly (it sounds like it's on a radio that's barely picking up the signal, just mainly static). The only reason I know what he's saying is because LfD says it, and I can recognize it b/c the... CEO? of Blender said the same thing (but saying Blender in place of Linux). I haven't tried the NHF for installing emu10k1 (tried without the NHF last night, but I don't have a /usr/source/linux (or something, it kept looking for the linux source code in a directory that isn't there... I don't even know where my Linux source code is) directory, along with a ton of other areas) yet, I'll do that when I get home. Next my video card. My monitor (IBM, model 2113 which isn't choosable in the setup) is busted and it's very dark. Instead of buying a new monitor, I just adjusted the gamma settings in Windows. I don't know how to do anything like that (or even change the color and/or resolution) in Gnome. Any time I use Xconfigurator, it screws things up severly, and the only way I know how to fix it is by reinstalling Linux. I can't find any Linux drivers for the Voodoo3 at the 3dFX site, it lists a row for them, but the columns are blank (I finally manually input the refresh rates found on the IBM site, and it worked OK, but everything is still VERY dark). Next my hard drive (and this happened when I tried using the Linux that came with LfD 2nd edition). I didn't know, until just last night, why my IDE controllers kept messing up under Windows. Aparently, any time I mount DOS drives under Linux, it screws with IDE controllers. After I mounted, then went into Windows, my hard drives were forced into MS-DOS compatibility mode. I admit, I didn't unmount them when leaving Linux, but I did unmount them later and that didn't fix the problem. I have two hard drives, floppy, and CD-ROM. CD-ROM on second IDE, hard drives on first IDE. In Windows, I have a Standard Dual IDE controller with Primary and Secondary children (which are the ones malfuntioning). Naturally I can't remove them (in regular or safe mode), and I can't remove the parent in regular mode. I can never remove the children, and any time I remove the parent in safe mode, it just reinstalls in regular mode, and doesn't fix the problem, the only way I found out I can fix it is by formatting the drive and reinstalling Windows (luckily, I'm one of the poeple who do that once every 2-3 months any way). I have Windows and Linux on one hard drive, and all my downloaded install files on the other hard drive. I'm thinking of putting a hard drive and CD-ROM on one IDE, the other hard drive on another IDE, putting Linux on the second hard drive, and my install files and Windows on the first hard drive (partitioning so I can continue to format and reinstall Windows occasionally). But if that won't help with the IDE problems when mounting, let me know. Finally, please don't be confused (with my knowledge of which IDE controllers are on what, video card set ups, and what not) into thinking I know what I'm talking about. I need step by step instructions on how to do anything. Also, I sincerely apologize for asking any questions that have been answered, but I've spent the last... 12 or so hours searching the internet for information on my hardware, HOWTO's, etc. and I'm tired of searching. As much as I'm for learning by doing and figuring it out, right now I just want to be led by the hand and told how to do everything. Thanks.

Eric

Sorry for the bad formatting. I didn't realize it would that hard to read, I'll do better next time (like using paragraphs) I promise.

Are there NHF's on the subject? Have you run searches in the hardware forum? I know for a fact that there's an NHF (Newbieized help file) kicking around at linuxnewbie.org about getting sblive to work under linux. Check it out and see if it helps. Update your drivers maybe? Although if it's RH 7 it should be FAIRLY recent.

Like I said, I haven't done the SB NHF yet (I was at school at the time), and I can't find Voodoo drivers. I just know that I tried installing the emu10k1 thingy, but that was prior to reading the NHF. I'll let you know once I try that. Thanks any way.

the equivalent to "restarting in dos mode", is for you to shutdown your X-server. The keys that you should hit in unison are:
ctrl-alt-backspace

Voodoo drivers at www.linuxvoodoo.org (http://www.linuxvoodoo.org) or dri.sourceforge.net (depending on what version of X you are using).

Just to you let you all know (if any one reads this any more), I got my sound card working. Now I NEED my modem, the video card isn't all that important. And once I get that working, I'll barely use Winblows any more, so I won't worry about the IDE problems or the vanishing CD-ROM. Thanks again every one.
