Does anyone know if any of the AMD Athelon chips (the T-Bird in particular) has the hardware serial number that supposedly reports itself on the internet? I know that the Pentium III's have it (along with software to supposedly disable it  ), but I was wondering about the AMD chips.

with the p3, you have to go into your bios and enable it, otherwise it is off

haven't heard of such a thing for AMD

No, Athlons don't implement a CPU ID.
This can cause problems, however, with programs which (expecting the CPU to be a Pentium) try to extract the CPU ID. There have been some posts here concerning this, and AMD's website also has a decent amount of documentation on the subject.

Been saving this just for you.

From a previous post.

At boot, it's trying to disable the cruddy P3 CPUID by default (DAMN Intel!), and since my Thunderbird processor doesn't have one, it's crashing. When I installed Redhat, where it asks for extra parameters to pass to the kernel, I just had to add x86_serial_nr=1 and it worked like a charm. If it's already installed, i would have typed linux x86_serial_nr=1 at the boot prompt to fix it.

Thanks folks... I've got a T-bird that I've been running for about a month now, and haven't had any such problems with it; but I wasn't sure, and didn't know how forthcoming AMD would be on the subject. I'll surf on over to their site, and check it out. Wouldn't have known to use "cpuid" in a keyword search either.

Just takes a little practice for searching the LNO forums. The search feature is actually quite good and sometimes does save time for some. I always recommend searching the forums first and also trying the same at Google (http://www.google.com/linux).

Yeah, I'm a former member here, so I know about searching first ;). There is a lot of information here at LNO, so specific searches can be a real life saver. Thanks for the Google link as well... I didn't know they had a search area for Linux :).
