Ok, so I did my homework - NHF, FAQ's, searched the forum. No luck.
Just installed my first Linux distro (Mandrake 7.1 - I know it's a bit old ) :)
Guess what? X configuration failed. I have a working system but in text mode. Last step before crash was a request to reconfigure. I selected Matrox Millenium II AGP 8Mb and a generic LCD screen (I have a Philips 150B LCD flat panel, not listed under Philips monitors), played with the resolution, and finally cancelled. Drakx quits and jumps to text mode, were I can logon. Any suggestions? I know the video board sucks, but that's what I have right know. What about a new version of Xfree86, would it help? Mandrake 8.0 would make a difference? A driver specific for this video board? Any help is appreciated.

Hi, and welcome ACD.

You may have better luck with XFree86 4.0.x which is included in Mandrake 7.2.
Upgrading the existing XFree86 3.3.6 in Mandrake 7.1 can be a real pain, even when using Mandrakes own RPMs, due to the inevitable dependency problems you most likely will run into.

The 'mga.o' modules available from www.matrox.com (http://www.matrox.com) usually require XFree version 4.0.x anyway.

Hope that helped just a little bit?

Cheers :)

Also, for X 4.0x, there is support for some Matrox cards with dri. Check dri.sourceforge.net.

For your monitor, try picking a laptop display at 1024x768x16bpp (or whatever yours requires).
