Sound worked fine for me on Mandrake 7.0, never had a problem, i use a ESS Technology ES1969 Solo-1 pci sound card, HardDrake shows it instaled with the correct drivers, but sound doesnt work, also when i try to log into gnome i hear sound like *to, to, to, to* as if the sound is frozen in a 1 second time frame and keeps on repeating, when i try to configure it through HardDrake it just freezes, i am out of ideas, anyone know what i can do?

go to a console, su to root and run kudzu. That should help you setup your soundcard. Try http://mandrakeuser.org, they got a lot of tips for users, the site is run by a Mandrake employee. HTH

I have the same problem with my 7.2 distro. My AWE64 worked in 7.0 MDK, but mandrake's own hardware tools weren't able to set up my soundcard even then. Problem was solved with sndsetup.
This time I had to install the ALSA-sound drivers found at www.alsa-project.org. (http://www.alsa-project.org.) Later I found out that the ALSA-drivers come also with MDK 7.2 but for some reason they are not used or there is some problem in harddrake using them. I didn't find any OSS sound drivers (only a quick look may be there or not) which are usually used for sound.
My advice: use the ALSA-drivers, they work fine.

Not sure if this relates, but I had problems with XMMS in Mandy 7.2. From the menu, it's command is "soundwrapper xmms." By getting rid of "soundwrapper", xmms plays normally. I still have problems with system sounds at startup (e.g., KDE Startup wave) so I just disable those.
I have a Yamaha XG Wavefore soundcard.

if you hear that *to*to*to sound, you have probably set up your sound card right, perhaps the actual ***** is your desktop environment - as you use gnome, the conflict must be between the esound demon and the sawfish theme sound setting , consider switching off any one - it will be fixxed - you dont' need that sawfish theme sound , or do you ? ;)

Well XMMS doesnt work either.. hell i'd turn all my sound off if i could but just to keep XMMS going, i am a victim of music so no matter what i do i have to be listen to some music!!! but when it comes to sound none of it works well, off to try out ALSA sound

Did you try launching XMMS from the command line by issuing "xmms" (without the quotes, of course)? Also, when you were using previous versions of Mandy, were you using ALSA sound drivers? If not, then there could be a problem with the ALSA sound driver being able to handle your sound card (well, I guess that's already obviuos). You might be able to debug it by going over to www.alsa-project.org (http://www.alsa-project.org) to see if the latest releases have bug fixes that affect your card. Good luck.
