PCI buses?

How many types of PCI buses are out there? Could this be a reason as to why a PCI card won't work? I have a very old computer, and I've noticed that some new PCI cards don't work on my machine, could this be a reason?

There are different versions of PCI. Most cards these days are PCI version 2.1, which is in most Pentium and higher machines. If your machine is a 486 or an early Pentium, then it probably has an older PCI bus.
