Does anyone here use the Ati xpert 98 or
128 video cards? Do they work well with
Linux?

For 2d graphics, they are fabulous. The rage pro chips should work with most any distro, and the Rage 128 should work any recent distro less than a year. For 3d, it is a little slow, and some combinations of chipsets are unstable, but than can be true of anything. The Radeon is much faster, but the drivers are still in early developement.

3D is just fine on my ATI Rage 128 Pro (in Windows that is). UT works fabously with D3D acceleration, so does all other games... But I'll bet a Geforce2 is faster :p

The Rage 128 video cards are well supported under XFree86 4.0.1 (which will most certainly work with any distro, even if it's older than a year ;)), to make configuration of the cards easier, you can use setrage (http://www4.ncsu.edu/~distclai/rage128-howto.html).

My point was that any Distros that came out in 2000, will support the Rage128 by default (they all had at least 3.3.6 if not 4.x). I never could get RH6.1 to work right even with upgrading to XFree86 3.3.6 on my Rage Fury. MDK7.0 just worked out of the box.

My Rage Pro (xpert@work) always just worked though.

While the fps is faste enough to be playable (30 at 800x600 and sometimes 1024x768) it is pretty slow compared to the newer cards out on the market.
