I just installed linux (redhat 6.2) and I am having trouble installing a modem. I followed a book I have to install it, but the error I am receiving is that Linux is not compatible with Windows software based modems.

The modem I have is a 3Com U.S. Robotics 56k PCI voice ready winmodem.

Is there any way around this? Is there any way I can use the modem still?

Thanks

The short answer is no.
The long answer is these modems use proprietary drivers which they haven't released the information on so open sourced drivers can be created. Nevertheless there are two types of winmodems which you can get working (with some difficulty) - the lucent and the PC-tel chipset - so unfortunately not yours. Check out http://linmodems.org for more information.
