Problem with modem in 2.4.x kernels

i have a problem with my sound and UT (look in the games bit for more info) so i have tried changing kernel from 2.2.19 to 2.4.18, it works but when i try to use Kppp to dial up to freeserve, it gives and error with exit status 4,
it seems to be connection but just 'crashes' after it connects, i have tried using PAP authentication, CHAP and terminal based, all produce the same error,

the modem works fine in 2.2.19 btw.

Did you compile the new kernel? If so, did you enable PPP support in it?

You might need a newer version of pppd. As far as I know that was the problem I had a long time ago with MDK 7.0 going from their 2.2 to 2.4 test
