Forgive .. as my username indicates I'm clueless ..
?? If a PCI adapter is installed prior to Linux being installed, the adapter is auto discovered (most times). If the adapter then is moved to a different slot Linux fails to see it. What course of action must I take for Linux to see the adapter in the new slot ???

What kind of card is it? And can you post the output (or the relevant section) of cat /proc/pci?

What distro of Linux are you using? Most (all?) distro's will do active hardware detection during the installation, but not all of them do the same at normal boot up.
Do as demian says:
let us know what kind of card it is.
type "cat/proc/pci" or "lspci" to list information for the PCI cards that Linux sees in your system.

OK .. heres the complete senario ..
My server has 6 PCI slots with the capability of adding a PCI expansion enclosure.
I desire to place my RAID controller in the expansion enclosure. The software used to configure the RAID adapter cannot "see" the RAID card across whatever PCI bridge is utilized. Linux 7.2 "sees" the card when installed in the ext enclosure, but cannot fdisk the drives. It was my hope I could configure the card & storage with the card installed in the host, then move it to the enclosure. Unfortunately when linux boots it does a continual "reset" of the RAID adapter,
so I am unable to post the output of the cmd you(s) have suggested.

I guess that's a little different than just moving the adapter to another pci slot.
If you have the actual hardware info, then try a Google search or perhaps the support site of the expansion enclosure.
