Ok, here's where my newbie / non-linux knowin butt is at now:

I found out what version of X I have, and its old- 3.3.3.1-49.

I know that I must update this version somehow. Based on what I saw here My problem is, how do I get these binaries needed onto my linux system? And what are the exact binaries I need? (i have Rhat 6.0 w/Gnome)

I ended up partitioning my drive, so I have dual boot capabilities, but I am running Win98 (Fat32) so its not as easy as me downloading them to the dos partition, then mounting the dos dir where I downloaded the binaries from within Linux cause Linux wont work with Fat32.

I tried getting linux up and running with my cable modem, (So i can do all the downloading from within Linux) but I see that you need to run netcfg from within Xwindow for that to work, and if you read below, me getting Xwin to run is Problem Numero Uno. I also did lsmod to see that the driver for 3c509 was there. insmod 3c509 said that it was already being used.

Is there some way that I can configure my internet connection from just a command prompt? (no GUI whatsoever)

Im all about learning as much as I can from the prompt first before im ready for Xwindows, but all the documentation i read assumes that you have Xwin working, and I do not.

Thanks...

Hi-

I have installed Red Hat 6.0 with Gnome as the windows manager. I have a Diamond Viper V770D display adapter.

When I run X, i have some slight resolution problems, to say the least. My resolution is like 320x240 or something outrageous like that. The cursor alone takes up most of my screen, Everything is HUGE!!

I have no idea how to fix this. Im guessing that I have to update my driver, go to XFree86.org or something like that. But I am a newbie, hence my post on this site. My knowledge of Linux is limited to the point that I am at right now, getting it installed.

Any assistance would be GREATLY appreciated.

I have become fairly frustrated with Microsoft. I backed up all my important info, ran DEBUG (Bye Bye Win98), Disk Druid, slapped on this old version of Red Hat, and Im ready to start a new chapter...help me with the first couple of lines, eh?

By the way, Im at work typing this, (on WIN NT) incase you're curious....

Thanks in advance.

Do you happen to know what version of X that Redhat 6 uses? X -version should tell you.

With that, head over to www.xfree86.org (http://www.xfree86.org) and see if that version supports the Viper V770D and what Xserver it uses. It may be necessary to upgrade X.

You can try to reconfigure using any of the following.

xf86config
XF86Setup
Xconfigurator
