I have a themaltake volcano 2 that i am going to install on an AMD athlon 1200mhz chip. There is a little sticky thing on the underside of the sink itself. Is this heat transfer material or just a sticky thing?
am i going to need some other material
it is about the size of the die only and won't cover all of the ceramic around the chip. thanyou in advance

the stuff is heat trnasfer stuff, but i would also slap some thermal compound on it. the amount they have is pretty neglibible.

I feel I need to point out, You don't want too much compound, only a thin film is needed. Any more then that, any your thermal grease compund acts like a great insulator. which is the opposite of your intention.

If you plan to use thermal compound such as Artic Silver, you should remove the original 'sticky thing' first.
Try to get off as much as you can and then use either nail polish remover or isopropyl alcohol to remove the remaining.
Do not touch any surface with your fingers no matter how clean you think they are.
When done cleaning off the old, then put a tiny amount of the thermal compound on the bottom of the heatsink and use a lint free cloth to apply to the area that will contact the cpu. This is just to fill in the tiny crevices. When dry, then again use a lint free cloth to go over the same area.
Clean the contact area of the cpu (the small square) with the alcohol and then apply a tiny amount of thermal compound (about the size of a rice kernal) and spread over the surface with something such as a matchbook cover or anything similar. The covering should be translucent.
Then carefully attach the heatsink to the processor.
Hope this helps.
