OK, so what's the diff between the data cdr cd's and the audio only cdr cd's. My dad picked up a box and can't do a thing with them. Also, is there a software (Linux or Win, I know, I know but he's too old to learn a new OS) that records audio on the fly, not recording audio tracks as data tracks. Am I describing that? All he has is the NCI Cd maker that came with the cdrw and it doesn't seem to do that.

i thought the only diff was that audio cdr included a payoff to the RIAA or whoever
they didn't work?
hmmm, they must have some thing coded on them so they will only work in those proprietary cd recorder thingys

Yes, there is software to write audio CDs as audio CDs. Check the CD burning howto at linuxdocs.org. ;)

That how to would be ok for me seeing as I have the exact same model cdrw Memorex cdr-1622, but the old man is stuck in Winderz land so I need to find a Doze music burner proggie. And Fobot, That may be so, but he bought Memorex cdr's just for that reason. But it gives him errors when he tries to write to them, but the regular cdr's write fine. He did this just last night.

they are "formatted" different, i just found some linkage
http://store.yahoo.com/jandr/tdk-cdr74m-30pk.html says "Formatted for Consumer Audio/Music component recorders"
http://www.gallagher.com/music/cdr.htm#FAQ%20Blank says
Why are audio CD-Rs and CD-RWs more expensive than the computer versions? The price of the audio version includes a levy that is paid to the music industry to be used to enforce their copyright laws. Part of a deal between the manufacturers of the recording CD players and the music industry.
i think the right answer is, don't buy "audio" cdr's for using in a "data" cdr burner, they are made for those other boxes, like the Philips 765 CDR Recorder
