I have a large goal in mind...
and I have most of the hardware to do it.
Here is what I want to do... Is it worth the setup?
A: 1 486 32MB RAM, (Not sure on HDD Size, all memory resident would be nice, but otherwise 450MB) - use - Firewall/Router (Too cheap for another IP address)Running Linux of course.
B: 1 P166 64MB RAM, 800 HDD for Server Program, 30gig & 2 CDROMs for storage & data. Running Linux, To be used as an FTP and Hotline server. Later to be used as a web server.
C: 1 P500 256 MB RAM, 13gig HDD Running win98/linux/2000 for Use by the by wife an me for games/websurfing. All my Mp3's and other Archived programs must be accessible from server cpu.
The ultimate goal, is to actually be able to reliably run a server while playing on the good machine.
Later I Can figure out the specifics, But will my hardware be enough?
or is it just impossible?

This should be just fine for a fw/gateway machine.

I'd like to see a little faster proc/system bus/more RAM on this machine, but work with whatcha got. The minimum RAM IMHO you would want for a server such as this would be 256MB. It's really cheap nowadays, you might consider upgrading this machine if at all possible.

Okeydokey. All in all looks like they would work out fine. As I said, I think your performance is going to lag on the p166, but give it a shot.

The p166 would take 72-pin edo ram and they are still fairly expensive compared to sdram. If you wanted to upgrade to 256MB, it would most likely be cheaper to upgrade the motherboard and cpu that would allow using sdram.
You would need an additional 6 x 32MB 72-pin to get to 256MB and the prices here in Toronto would cost around $500 at the lowest price I can find. Some stores here still sell 32MB at $130 which would make the upgrade cost around $875 with taxes.
See how the server runs with the 64MB and if it doesn't do the job, then consider upgrading.

I think I am going to hold off on using the 166 as a web server, but it will still remain a FTP/Hotline Server. I think this will alliviate my Need for too much more RAM. (I only have two banks, and I have 32M in each (72pin EDO))
I really appreciate the Information.
Thank you.

If you have 16 or 32MB 72pin modules, I would pay you for them if the price is right. Still need them for my home Netware servers. Want to upgrade to Netware 5.1 soon and the more memory, the better. Please let me know. Thanks.

Firewall/router on a floppy, advisable to run it on a 486 but will run on a 386.
