Brief hardware rundown:
LINUX dist: Mandrake 7.2

System Memory: 320mb 100mhz RAM
Bios: phonix bios (update: latest from gateway)
Video: (temp) Canopus Riva 128
(RMA'ed)Geforce 256 32mb
Hard drive: both EIDE
C: 10gb (windoze 98 (1st ed.) drive)
D: 40gb (mandrake's cozy little abode)
and then there is my NIC.
**************
NE2000 compatible ISA card
It is not detected during hardware setup

Ive read most of the posts in the hardware section, and this one best describes the problem I am currently having with my new
linux installation.
Pras your comment about the PCI card looks like a good fix, but will it work for my ISA card too?
Everything works except this network adapter. Overall im still giddy with my overall sucess with my limited knowledge of linux in general, but im learning and reading all I can to get up to speed. When I finally get this working, im going to joyfully remove windows from my computer.
I have an ADSL connection through verizon now, and I just know it will go to better use under linux. Where should I start to find a fix? Do I need to gather some more info about my system configuration?
Also here is a very newbish question, do my IRQ, memory, and COM port settings stay the same as under windows?

thanks in advance for any help.

First of all, you should turn off PnP OS in the BIOS. Oh wait... Guess Gateway's don't have that option.

ISA nic? You should have a configuration utility on the driver diskette that runs in dos. Use that to disable the ISA PnP (if it has PnP) and then use the same config utility to change the IRQ and I/O to ones that are not used by your system.

If you don't have this utility, you should be able to download it from the their website.

Nope, linux won't find the card unless you tell it where to look, i.e. the i/o address. My DSL router is hooked up through one like yours (a DLink NE2000 clone) that I run with a module. Here are the two lines from my /etc/modules.conf file that make it work.

alias eth0 ne
options ne io=0x300

If you have it compiled into the kernel, you have to use an append line in your /etc/lilo.conf or /boot/grub/menu.lst file. The appropriate Howto should guide you through it.

actually my bios did have the enable pnp os option and I turned that off before the install.

im going to go find that how to on the append line and try this. Thanks for the help folks.

is newbization forever?

congrats :) I have a ne2k compat nick too... they're great 'cause of their overwhelming support.

Welcome, bretheren, to linux... enjoy your stay.
