Someone gave me a Compaq CDS 724 (486) with 24 megs of Ram.
I installed Red Hat 7 on the machine. It got all the way throught the install and then asked me the magic questions

1. Your monitor: I selected the option for syncmaster 3
2. Your Clock Chip; ( I tried everyone in the list)
3: your montitor Viewing sessions

(Earlier I had chosen an option for video card as Generic VGA. This machine does not have a video card per se. However it does have 1 mg of Video Ram. )

To say the least I cant get X windows running at all.
As I went to set up the machine a screen did say that if the settings do not work you might need a RAMDAC, a Clockchip, or a specal option "nolinear for s3" to probe and start up correctly: What does that mean??

I restarted the computer and tried to run it from the command prompt and it gave me this long thing that the server was killed. It referred to a log file, and when I went to the logfile it was blank.

Has anyone ever had this happen before and does anyone know of a solution??

Thank you

:)

Those are options you would add/setup in /etc/XF86Config. Your Presario is probably using the S3 Trio video.

Did you get the manuals for the Presario? You could always go to Compaq and lookup your PC to find the video specs. http://web14.compaq.com/falco/sp_list.asp

Thankyou for your comments. I already searched the specs at Compaq. It says that it has 1 mg of video ram, but does not specify the chip.
I tried all of the options that were available to me but none of them seemed to have worked.
S3 is that the Clock Chip that they are refererring to ??
Do you know what a clock chip actually is?
Thank you

What was listed in the clock chip selection? Video cards?

I would suggest you try the S3 Trio or try searching the Compaq forums as you may find additional info on your particular Compaq and the video chip it uses.
