When I run the various "3D" screensavers included with linux, I notice severe blinking. This blinking is so bad that the screen saver runs at a snail's pace.
I noticed blinking in one other application: Quake 3. To fix it I had to do something with the Z buffer (either enable it or disable it). Does anyone know what may be causing my blinking? I'd sure like to fix it. :D

No answer? Sorry, you can take it out of my pay. Shame on us.
I'm surprised everyone here (except me) hasn't had the exact same problem as yours. ;)
Is it imperitive you use 3D screensavers? Anything in the screensaver config that would help?

Thanks for the reply, md.
It's not terribly important to me to use 3D screensavers, I just like to have everything working perfect.
Sometimes I get so lost. I've been using computers ever since I was born (my dad's a programmer by profession) and know so many OSs inside out. Linux is new to me and the most challenging yet.
3D screensavers look awesome, but on my computer they don't. Anything 3D blinks like crazy. It's kinda like every frame clears the screen and then draws itself. I dunno if this is normal, or if there's something misconfigured.
I installed RedHat 7 and just let it set up all my hardware itself (it auto detected the voodoo).

Is 3d acceleration really working? Make sure you have the dri stuff from dri.sourceforge.net if you are running X 4.x - which is the default in RH7 afaik.
Also be sure you are running your desktop in 16bit color, and you have 640x480, 800x600, and 1024x768 defined as valid resolutions at that color depth, as well as any others you run.

Okay.. So I need this DRI stuff to get it working? Sounds good.. I'll get cracking on that as soon as I get home!

It helps to be running a 2.4.x kernel (now up to 2.4.3) Under Char devices, make sure you have agp support for your chipset as well as DRI and your video chipset as a module.
such that:
agp - y
DRI - y
Voodoo3 - m
