Ok, I just got a new Iwill KA266 motherboard and for some reason in win2k it will not play nice at all with my ATI RAGE FURY. Everything works fine in Linux, but in win2k(if I can get it installed at all) it locks up in anything but VGA mode, and when I move the mouse it distorts the display. Anyway, I can't get it working, I tried everything that has been suggested to no avail, so I guess I am looking for a new card. I hate to say it, but I need Win2k for some things. Anyway, can anyone give me some suggestions as to what to buy, I am not much of a gammer but I would like to have decent 3D and for what I just spent on the other upgrades I don't think that my wife will let me spend much more. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Have you checked www.rageunderground.com (http://www.rageunderground.com) ?

Also I remember I have that same card and there was one BIOS setting that would cause all sorts of grief, in Windows, if it was set wrong, but linux chugged along without a hitch.

Thanks for the link. I did find one thing on there that might be the problem and I will check it out when I get home.

Nothing at www.atitech.com? (http://www.atitech.com?) FAQ's, new drivers etc. Kinda surprised W2K would not be supported by the Ati Rage Fury. Tried changing any BIOS settings to get it to work?

Yeah thats the strange thing. Until I changed motherboards it worked fine in Win2K. I have been tweaking my bios settings to see if that would help, and at times it seems promising, but anytime I set the display to anything above 16 colors and 640X480 I freeze up solid. I don't think it's a compatibility issue with Win2K I think it is more of an incompatability between my video card and motherboard that affects Windows dramatically, but has no effect on Linux.

you may want to check and see if there is an update to the bios. May be a wild shot in the dark. I know that there are probs with some combos, ie. asus a7v sockit, athlon 1000, and win ME. Bad combo but not others go figure.

Is the Rage Fury the 8mb card? I think thats what mine is--win2k calls mine rage fury pro i think. I have had problems in win2k w/ this card also. Sometimes when I run a game/or sometimes at boot-up, I get the messed up screen and the mouse just leaves marks all over it. I did go ahead and d/l some newer drivers, but then my games didnt work! So I just use the old drivers until I can afford a nice card. BTW, does anyone have some suggestions for a nice video card? I use Mandrake 7.2 and am a linux "newbie" so I kinda would like it to be pretty much self configured. Is the ATI 32mb Radeon good for Linux?

Is the ATI 32mb Radeon good for Linux?

I was wondering the same about the Radeon since I thinking of building another system soon. Memory prices have dropped lately, so the time is right. Picked up 2x256-PC133 for the new PC and 2x128-PC133 to upgrade the other. Prices are 1/4 what they used to be 6 months ago.

I spent some time yesterday at www.atitech.com (http://www.atitech.com) researching the Radeon and what Linux drivers are available. ATI does not write their own, but they release the specs for 3rd party development of drivers.

Searching the forums for Radeon will give you a idea of what to expect.

I have a geforce DDR from elsa and I have full opengl in X and 1600x1200 on a 20inch is not to shabby :)
nvidia drivers do the trick for my games.

Nope it's just a plain old Fury, one chip, 32mb of ram. Like I said, it use to work in Win2k before I got this new motherboard.
