I had the system freeze on me and was unable to exit so I had to shutdown (ran out of time- no other choice!). Now when I reboot I can't get X windows and therefore KDE to run, I can log in- must be in level 3?
I had the following messages appear on the screen
hda: status error: status =0x58{DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest}
hda:drive not ready for commands
hdb: command error :status =0x51{DriveReady SeekComplete Error}hdb: command error: error 0x54
ATARI device hdb:unknown Error type: no sense data--(Sense key=0x00)
No additional sense information-- (asc=0x00, ascq 0x00)
isofs_read_super: bread failed, dev=03:40, iso_blknum=16, block 32

I had to reboot( time constraints again) when I logged on again the following appeared
hda status error : status 0x58 {DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest}
hda drive not ready for command
hda: status error : status 0x50{driveReady SeekComplete DataRequest}
hda:no DRQ after issingMULTIWRITE
hda:status timeout: status =0xd0 {busy}
hda: noDRQ...
ide 0:reset :success

-what have I done? What does it mean?
I'm not sure but I think I was opening files as root(before crash)-I know but in Hardrake you must su as root to run it!
Running Mandrake 7.2
pent 111 700mhz.
Is this enough info?
Regards and Thank you in advance.

You could try running a file system check (fsck I think) Try 'man fsck' or read the How-To's at linuxdoc.org on filesystems etc. I've never had to myself, so I'm just going by what I've read here in the past.

Do you get any error messages when you either 'startx' or 'startkde'?

When the computer crapped out, it probably had some very important files in it's cache that didn't get written back to disk. Looks like you might have to do a re-install. Although it is possible to fix the problems manually, it will be very time consuming to find out which files are affected. One way to prevent coruption of your HDD is to replace the ext2fs partitions with reiserfs partitions. I don't know all the specifics, but reiserfs plays nicer after a hard-shutdown.

Thanks guys,
first I tried 'startkde' and got a series of
'unable to open display' type messages.
Then tried ' startx', and KDE started! :-))
Still got a few minor problems to sort out, but I'm back in business.
Appreciate your help guys, thanks.
Regards, ajwhite.
