I have a mediaone cable box and for some reason my Mandrake 7.1 won't recognize it. It recognizes my ethernet card but i cant get it to find my modem. Any advise?

It doesn't need to find the cable box, just the card. From there, you just plug in the network settings for the cable modem and you should be good to go.

I'm running 7.2
Try "DrakConf"
look for "network and internet configuration"
This should let you pick cable connection

Mediaone, AFAIK, uses DHCP to assign everything. Drake, based on RH, which is what I use, likely still does this work with "pump". This utility queries the Net for the addy of the DHCP box, gets an IP from it and fixes up the routing, and installs the DNS boxes in /etc/resolv.conf. In Atlanta, (my experience), this results in a 8 hour lease on that IP. Pump will renew at 7 hours. Try this; pump -i eth0. Furious blinking should occur, and after that ifconfig should show your new IP. Pump -s gets all the stats it knows, and a cat /etc/resolv.conf assures you it ran correctly. Read the man page on pump, very capable utility for this. HTH, Ray
