I have a simple query: if i upgrade to kernel 2.4 and I plug in a borrowed cd-writer will it "just work" that is what will I have to further do to set it up.

I have Mandrake 7.2 and KDE 2.0 on an AMD K6-350 with 128 bla bla bla....

Thanks for any suggestions.

You will need to properly compile your kernel.

SCSI Support, SCSI-CDROM support, SCSI-Generic

USB CORE, USB File System, USB Chipset (Super seven boards use either Via-OHCI or ALi-UHCI), USB Mass Storage

It will then work best for the first time if it is plugged in and turned on when you boot.

It should there after be recogineze as a scsi cdrom drive.
www.linux-usb.org (http://www.linux-usb.org) will have more info.
