When I first installed linux mandrake 7.2 the sound worked beautifully. After a series of very bad accidents that happened all at once, I had to reinstall linux. Well now the sound is all distorted (I can hear it but the sound is low and kinda raspy), and I'm not sure why. The settings (DMA, IRQ, etc.) are configured correctly (as far as I can tell). Any help anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated.
I suggest that You start with checking the speakers - connect them to a radio or something, check the cable, if You unplugged them from the soundcard did You put the connector back right?
I can't help You with Linux configuration, but in my experience this is often a hardware problem of some kind.

Thanks. that is exactly what it was. the output plug on my soundcard is wearing out and needed a little jiggle.
