Good morning,
Are you using XFree86 4.0.*? At one point, I had a GeForce 2 MX running under Debian, but I don't remember all of the steps involved. However, if you visit debianplanet.org (http://www.debianplanet.org), you'll find a link on the front page for installing XFree86 4.0.1 using dpkg; there is also a link of other apt-get sites that will let you use apt to install X.
After 4.0.1 is installed, you should be able to use the nvidia tgz files to recompile the modules for your use.
Sorry I couldn't be more help.
Actually the GeForce2 MX was supported in Debian since XFree-4.0.1 (because it was built from CVS source). The 'nv' driver works great for 2D, you only need to add GLX and the NVdriver kernel module if you want GL support (screensavers, games, xmms visual effects, etc).
