I am constructing a new sytem and I'd like opinions on hardware that works well and is supported by Linux.
I have already purchased a case ( Antec SX830) and motherboard ( Abit kA7). I now need advice on :
Soundcard ( 32 meg minimum)
Video card ( surround sound )
Home wireless networking equipment.
I will use a 1 gig AMD Athlon chip, 256 meg pc133 ram, an ultra 66 7200rpm WD harddrive
and will install a DVD CD/R.
Thanks for the help.

Check the hardware compatabilty list for your distro and search the forums here as the subject is a popular one.

Why the Western Digital harddrive?
My understanding is that WD is not too 'Linuxfriendly' as their ATA66 specs are quite 'relaxed'.
This may have changed during the last year, but I have already fried one WD disk under Linux.

Why not go for the IBM DTLAs? Great performance, low noice.

I currently use 3 Western Digital drives, a 4 gig, a 20 gig and a 30 gig. All are functioning fine with Linux.
I have 3 versions of Linux currently installed on the same machine, and all work well.
Libranet Debian, SuSe 7, and Slackware 7.
Also had RedHat 7 running but dumped it to try the others.

If you want a top end sound card well supported, the only choice is an SB Live!

If you don't mid waiting a bit for 3d, get a Radeon. A Matrox or Voodoo card would be ok, and if you are a Linux weenie that doesn't care about open source and wants fast 3D fps at the expense of a crystal sharp picture, then by all means put up with the headaches of a closed source binary driver from Nvidia.
