Johnmann,
tarball format is like zip, but is used for packaging files together so they do not get lost in transfer. Tarring a afile is not a form of compression, only packaging. The best pointer for your question is, from command line:
man tar
This will bring up the manual page that will tell you how to use it. As for where to save the file. Traditioonally in the home directory. If you are logged in as root you might save it in your root directory ( the first directory one logs into as root).
When you have it in the plaxce you would like to open the tar "package" <type>
tar -xvf emu10k1-0.3b.tar
this should "unwrap" the package.
To find out how to install <type> either:
vi README
or
vi INSTALL
Either one of these files (or both) should give instructions on how to compile and install the package.
Goodluck!

See if this (http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/intel/soundcards/sblive.html) helps.

Are you doing tar -xvf em10k1 after you've done gunzip em10k1? You may need to do a tar -zxvf emu10k1.tar.gz.

Download the file again. Perhaps it is corrupt. After that, instead of doing a gunzip first, just do a tar -zxvf emu10k1.tar.gz (or whatever the filename is). It does the gunzip for you. The go from there. Also, post your exact error message.

Possibly. Floppies are notorious for failing. Are you dual booting? If so, you can mount your 2k partition while in linux and get it from there.

Do you have 'PnP OS' turned off in you BIOS? This sometimes helps Linux detect and configure PCI cards.

I've never heard anything good about corel linux. May I suggest using a different distro? When I used Mandrake, it recognized my sblive, tv card, burner and voodoo3. It even set up 3d for me. If you don't have high speed access, I'll send you a copy if you'd like. Let me know either here or at damasta@teknospy.com .
