Hi all.
I was just wondering what the best/correct procedure to change a video card is. I'm going from a Trident POS to an Accelgraphics Permedia2. I know I need the glint driver for the card.
But I can't find any info on actually upgrading/changing a video card.
Any help is much appreciated.

change your vdo card > start linux in textmode > re-configure X , ( your new card will be detected ...)
you might also want to run kudzu - the hardware wizard.

ok.
first of all, kudzu didn't detect anything.
I ran XF86Config and went thru everything, picking the AccelStar Permedia2 card, and entered 8000K for memory.
First of all, the xserver wouldn't start--no screens detected. I then remembered something about having to copy and paste some info from my old x3.3 config file to the new 4.0 file. did that. xstarts.
But it really sucks. I have 1024x768 at 16bit color. But the graphics are god-awful SLOW. Even LBreakout is really choppy. And that was fine with my old Trident9750Agp.
Also, after several minutes of inactivity, the screen REALLY gets buggered up. Screen saver comes on, then I can't get cleanly back to my desktop.
Is the glint driver that bad? Or is something configured wrong? I know the card isn't all that bad. I was using it at work with Solidworks.
My config files can be found here: http://www.speakeasy.org/~jabster/xf86configfiles/
Also, the card is AGP. It shows up in HardDrake as PCI.
Help?
Thanks,
john
p.s. just noticed this. Konqueror is ok. But viewing LNO is really bad in netscape. Text is cut in half and all over the place.
Also, the reason I switched cards is that I could never get 1024x768 on my Trident-800x600 max. I got the Permedia for $20. But if this is the best it will do, I'll go back to the crappy Trident.

First of all, don't worry that it's detected as a PCI as it does so in most systems.
Make sure you have the appropriate Xserver installed for your new card before trying to reconfigure it.
Just a guess though.
