I recently purchased a Abit vp6 motherboard, dual processor. I want to make a server/storage unit for my files and services. In your minds, which is better to invest in a SCSI RAID system or the cheaper alternative the IDE RAID system which is built into the motherboard? Will I see a drastic speed difference? What about reliability?

I'm pretty sure SCSI will give you a drastic speed increase, due to the big fat pipe it has to transfer data as opposed to the weiner little ide channel on your mobo. I think SCSI is built for speed too. If you can swing the price, go SCSI.

SCSI Raid, definitely.
The 'built-in' IDE Raid controller on most motherboards are crappy at best under Linux (if you get then to work at all). They were, as far as I know, designed for Windoze only.
If you want IDE Raid under Linux, you should go for software Raid. That works pretty well, and the toll on your CPU(s) isn't too high (so I'm told). Check the IDE Raid HOW-TO.
SCSI, definitely. With a max transfer rate of 160MB/s, and the fact that it suppports multiple command queing (which IDE does not), SCSI smokes.
