I have a built in soundcard AC97 on VT8233 Southbridge chipset. I am using Redhat 7.3.
My soundcard is not working. First, I tried out sndconfig. It did detect the card but just hangs on playing the sound sample..

When I tried to install VIA drivers (www.viarena.com) according to specified instructions, I got the following error : -
[root@dv42m44 74audio.rht73.athlon]# sh vinstall
-------- install start --------
/lib/modules/2.4.18-3/kernel/drivers/sound/viaudio.o: invalid parameter parm_irq
/lib/modules/2.4.18-3/kernel/drivers/sound/viaudio.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.4.18-3/kernel/drivers/sound/viaudio.o failed
/lib/modules/2.4.18-3/kernel/drivers/sound/viaudio.o: insmod viaudio failed
-------- vinstall end --------
Please help.. What does parm_irq mean?

First try disabling PnP OS in the bios and see if that fixes the problem.

Reply back if it doesn't.

I could now run sndconfig but the following error message was displayed on playing the sound sample:-

The following error occurred running the modprobe program:
/lib/modules/2.4.18-5/kernel/drivers/sound/via82cxxx_audio .o: init_module: No such device
/lib/modules/2.4.18-5/kernel/drivers/sound/via82cxxx_audio
.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.4.18-5/kernel/drivers/sound/via82cxxx_audio .o failed /lib/modules/2.4.18-5/kernel/drivers/sound/via82cxxx_audio o: insmod sound-slot-0 failed ?

This was after I disabled PnPOS option in the BIOS.

I got the via8233a to work with the cvs version of alsa. The latest release isn't good enough though. When I tried snd config in redhat 7.2, it said that I'd have to use alsa... apparently this is changed in 7.3 if it 'works' for you.

there is a difference between the 8233a and the 8233 though, but I thought I might be able to help.
