Okay which of these can I get running under Mandrake 7.1?
OPL3-SAX: Currently sndconfig locks up but CTRL+C will get out.

YAMAHA OPL YMF262-M / OPTi 82C924 Insmod craps out. This is the closest to success I have had in `Drake so far.

ESS AudioDrive ES1868F `Drake picked it up but modprobe died......

YAMAHA YMF724F-V Not supported, I figure this is a lost cause but listed it anyhow!

Now to the sound card guru's which one of these is my best bet. If I need new drivers where can I locate them. Are there any "tricks" that may help? I have been searching but not much info. Then again I suck at finding info for sound cards and modems. I find all sorts of stuff for Video and NIC!

Thanks!!

Well I got the Yamaha OPL3-SA2/SA3 to sort of play a little sound bite. It plays "Hello" then quits without finishing the rest of Linux Torvolds sound file.

I must be very tired, I read the subject and though it was

1) a big motherboard
2) Very mad

I've had 2 sound cards before, one for mp3's and one for normal sound. That was fun, but 4 in the same machine?

Have you tried to disable the PNP OS function in BIOS? Thats works for me and my Creative PCI 128 SB. Before disabling it Mandrake 7.1 and 7.2beta were recognizing my sound card but always failed to insmod.

This is well supported under Linux, I think. Did you try to set up as Windows Sound System other than ESS support? One of my card is generic ESS sound chip and it will not work with ESS specific chip support under RH but it worked under "Windows sound system". I think it has to do with WinSound or something such as Winmodem.
Mandrake should be close enough with RH support.

You probably wouldn't want to be using insmod either, modprobe is just insmod, but also inserts all a modules dependancies.

Hey,

Setting 'PNP Aware OS' to 'OFF' in the BIOS solved that problem for me once before, too.

Did you run 'cat /proc/ioports' and 'cat /proc/interrupts' to see if there's an issue or conflict there? On one box I actually specified an IRQ for a device in the BIOS - but it was a very new BIOS and it made it pretty easy to figure out - I don't think I could get that done on my box at home.
