I just got my Red Hat 7 system up and running a few days ago. Anyway, I read somewhere about a speed tweak for your hard drive (example given was on Red Hat) involving setting 32 bit access and DMA. The problem is, when I tried to do it, Linux told me it was not permitted.
And now I can't remember where the post was. Was it on this site ? Anyone know ? Any other speed tweaks out there I have missed ?
Any and all help greatly appreciated....

You have to be root with full privileges. The man page suggests booting as linux single.

The link to the NHF is linked in my signature. Sorry about the pop-up.

An excellent O'Reilly article:

*grins* and
HEARTILY reccomends running in linux single when you do the speed tweaks ... having recovered from a disastrous error in judgement once. ... (by reinstalling)
