Self proclaimed newbie is what I would tell first of all. Although I do work with a bunch of Linux/UNIX junkies. I would ask them for help but they are too busy at work to help me. Some here may understand. I am a tech writer - not a software developer.

Second my problem. I was attempting to install Mandrake 7.1 on to my Linux 2615DVD laptop. I am putting Linux on it to make a firewall because I am getting Road Runner. The laptop has a toshiba DVD player in it. I am not interested in having the DVD capabilities of the DVD player, I just want it to detect my CDROM drive. I reformatted my hard drive and inserted the 3.5 boot disk into the drive. It starts the installation procedure, finds my HDD but then asks for what type of CDROM I have. Apparently the default is SCSI but I don't have that kind of money to put a SCSI CDROM in my laptop. Anywho, it gives me a list of drivers that it has but this list does not include Toshiba. What are my choices? Am I SOL?

The model number for the DVDROM drive is:
SD-C2202

first go into your bios when starting your computer by hitting the del key or F1 key or similar when promted to. Once you are in the bios look for the boot options and set it so your dvd/cd-rom is the first boot device. then put the first CD in the drive save your changes to the bios and reboot. Your computer should boot off of the cd in your dvd drive. If your bios doesn't have that function check for a bios update first then check out -http://www.linux.org/hardware/laptop.html
there is alot of linux documentation specific to laptop systems there.
hope this helps.
