USB Scanner

Has anyone had luck installing a USB scanner in Linux? I'm running SuSE 6.3 and can't get my Canon N1220U USB scanner to work. I know USB is currently iffy at best, but was hoping some Linux Guru had figured out a work around. Thanks in advance for any help.
