GeForce 2 MX, X starts and dies shortly after

I just got a GeForce 2 MX video card, downloaded the Nvidia drivers (RPM
format), then popped in the card. I upgraded from X 3.3.6 to 4.0, configured
it as best I could using xf86config, installed the kernel module and GLX,
then modified the XF86Config file like the instructions said to.

X starts, but before it does, there's a bunch of flickering with blue bands,
then it gets to the desktop. After a few seconds, it totally dies, without
any helpful errors from either the window manager or the X logs.

Any ideas what I can do to get X to stay up? Do I *need* to update to 4.0.1
(a fairly large download for my puny modem, one I'd rather avoid)? Or is there
some oddball step I might've overlooked?

I'm using an AMD K6-2 380, Red Hat 6.1, and the stock kernel.

Things you can try:

1.) Reload the kernal and GLX modules with source instead of RPM. They seem to work better for some odd reason.

2.) Disable AGP in the XF86Config file. This usually gives better stability.
