If anyone can suggest an external modem that works well with Linux I could use the help. I just installed Linux-Mandrake 7.1 and need to buy a modem that will work. I currently have a winmodem that I know will not work. I have read that most external modems will work. Can anyone give me any suggestions?
Thanks to all.

Well, most external modems would work. I only tried USR external modems after deciding to trash my winmodem. Right now I'm using USR Voice/Faxmodem Pro external and so far it's working perfectly well.

My apologies but I'm just a crazy newbie (I'm only telling u this because the leprechaun on my shoulder told me to).

I'm using a Lucent Win-Modem. It works OK, but it uses part of the CPU, and slows things down a bit. Can't wait to start using USB modems in Linux and free up my PCI slots.
The Lucent Modem only costs $20.00 and it's a short term investment, til USB arrives...
Your LT Winmodem takes noticable CPU time? That's strange, I thought the new ones were quite a bit better, reducing CPU time to a very minimal, unnoticable amount (sub-1%). Oh well.
I have an internal ISA 56K 3COM modem, and I need help getting it to work... Running pnpdump I can see that it 'knows' that it is there, but how do I make it work? I had it dialing at one point, but I can't get it to do that anymore (several installs later).

Thanks for the replies everyone. I won a bid on a US Robotics 33,600 external modem on e-bay. I am going to give it a try as soon as it arrives. I may be back looking for more help.
Thanks to all again,
