My desktop display is only about 1/2 the size of my 16" viewable screen. What did I do wrong? This is way too small?

Let us know what distro (including version) you're using, as well as your version of XFree86. You should be able to get that by typing one of the following in a terminal window:
X -version
XFree86 -version
