Do you have an audio cable connecting the back of your CDROM to your soundcard? If you don't, get one and connect it. Next thing to check is the level controls on your sound mixer - is the CD input muted or turned very low - if so, increase the level.

Some distros require the user to be a member of the audio group, so you might check that as well.

What distro are you using ?
In some distros you have to set the permissions to the cdrom and to the mixer.
Have you checked the mixer to see if the cdrom is "mute" ?

Not at all though I don't shout. I politely ask them not to crosspost and give at least one of the main reasons why and then I thank them for understanding.
I've seen others do
 crossposting

Well, I am using RH7.3 and the general X system sounds are OK. I have checked the groups and there is no audio or cdrom. I did check the mixer and that is OK as well (no group here).
Funny thing is that undr Win2K (what I am trying to get off!!!!) plays the CDs OK and no cable. Also the sound card is integrated into the m/b.
So I do not think it is a cable. Any other ideas????
Thanks

Hi there,
now that I have woken up. More info.
I am using a VIA chipset on an Intel P3 board. The sound card reports as a VT62C686 AC97 Audio Controller. The m/b is an Apollo VT82C692A (PRO 133x)
Does this help?

If you say you don't have the audio cable connected but it works in win2k then win2k is using digital audio via the IDE cable. Not sure if linux can handle the digital audio bit. Try putting on the audio cable.

Also the VIA AC97 sound card isn't really a sound card as such. It is a software type and again I have no idea if linux can handle this. It is sort of like a winmodem of the soundcard type. If that makes any sense.

You will need a audio cable going from your cdrom to the cd-audio input plug on the motherboard

I am having some problems getting my Ensoniq 1731 pci/integrated sound card to work under RH 7.3; just wondering if anyone has any suggestions of what I can do to get sound. I appreciate any help you can give me.

Sorry for the previous posting... I had been playing with this for a while with no luck. After looking around on the board here, I tried a couple things and got my sound working. I actually had a 1371 sound card not 1731. But, that doesn't matter, cause I have sound now :) YEAH!!!
