I am really interested in learning Linux. I have a PBell computer w/2g harddrive to use. It is a pentium 166 w/64 ram. I can't find documentation to see if linux will run on it. I would use formated drive w/ only linux. I could learn more about linux by installing and facing whatever comes, if I just knew it was possible w/ this machine.
Thanks, Dyna

You shouldn't have any problems running Linux on it, unless it has some really non-standard components in it, which I doubt.
However.
Modern desktop environments, like KDE and GNOME, which are generally the easiest to use for newbies, will run pretty slowly on that spec. You should just about manage a graphical install from the likes of Mandrake, SuSE or RedHat. If you have access (or know someone who has access) to a high speed net connection and a CD burner, I would give a couple of distros a whirl, and see which is best for you. Once you have got the hang of whats going on, then you can maybe go for a more 'slimline' distribution that would help you machine run a little faster.
Hope that makes sense.
Thank you for your quick reply. I do have DSL at work and would be able to download. I have already downloaded a multitude of Red Hat manuals, etc. I am glad that it is possible with this machine and am excited about getting started with Linux.

With only 64mb, any of the newer distros will run a little slow if you use Gnome or KDE.
You will either need to use a older distro or a newer one but use a lightweight windows manager & desktop environment.
