I tried to install Linux on my computer once, and when I went to start it up, all that showed up on the monitor was just kinda like snow on the TV screen. Now a friend has given me a new computer w/ Mandrake Linux on it, and I know it works fine on whatever monitor he used, but when I go to load it using my monitor, the monitor does the same thing it did when I tried to install it before. Is there some code or something that I can change to make it work w/ my monitor? Please help, I'm a total Linux newbie! Thanks!

Well, if it's already installed, you could just wait until you know it's at the login screen, and hit "cntl+shift+F1" to go to a CLI (Command Line Interface). From there, you could login like normal, and resetup X for you monitor. Probably what is happening is that he installed it using a much better monitor, so X is set up thinking your monitor can do something like 1280x1024@100Hz, but it can't, so you're gettting garbage. The CLI should work regardless though. You could run the XF86config program, but since most everything is already set up, I'd suggest manually editing the XF86Config-4(?) file, just changing the monitor values to something you know your monitor can handle. I'm not very good at getting X set up manually (to any of those who posted to help me with debian, my computers been upgraded(1.4 GHz(Athlon Thunderbird) up from Celeron 300(oc'd to 450)), so I temporarily had to go back and reinstall Windows & Mandrake before I can work on Debian again, but I haven't given up!!), so hopefully someone else can help explain a little further, and correct anything I explained wrong.
