ello!
I just got a Dell OptiPlex XL 575(P75, 40megs RAM) for $10 at a garage sale and wanted to hook it up as my web server(until I can afford a real computer). I put a 10 gig in it and a 3com 3c509b-tp. I have @home cable connect.

Mandrake 8.1 loaded eth0 OK but wouldn't get an IP from DHCP... said to check the cable. The cable was fine as it was plugged into my other system moments before working great.
I had luck a while back when I was playing with Redhat so I figured I'd try installing that instead, but it doesn't even load eth0 at all, let alone try to get an IP.
I've disabled Pnp in the dos config for the card and set Irq5 and I/O 350h, but no dice.
It passes all tests in the config util and says its good to go....

help?

Have you tried running netconfig? You said you used DHCP, but does it automaticall set every thing from IP to Net Mask and Gateway? I have it but I've never used it. I always run netconfig at the prompt and that brings it up instantly. (it will run you through a series of ?'s so be prepared to have all the info you need - I hope this doesn't sound belittling) If all things point to a recognized piece of hardware, then you should get net immediately.

Good luck. -- sorry my experience with Mandrake is lacking, but I think it might be the same in this area.

I just checked the Red Hat hardware compatibilty page and they don't list that generation card. Take a look at what they have listed.

You may want to look closer at that ;)
23 entries down - 3com 3c509b-tp

As for netconfig.... it doesn't do any good to run it if the module for eth0 isn't even loaded. I've tried. Under RedHat or Mandrake it won't load the driver for card period.

I tried running the dos config utility again to see if changing the irq or i/o settings might help and now it looks as though the card itself may be the problem as it's not even registering under that anymore :(

I'm gonna try getting another nic and see if it's just the card.

Thanks for trying though guys :) I appreciate it!!

Anyone else have any idea's?
