When rebuilding a kernel when you go to choose your processor etc. There is the optiion for 820 proc support. And there is the option for PGE extensions. I have searched so many docs and reference books. Anybody know what these are?

Have you gone through the kernel documentation included with the source? There's quite a bit of it and may answer your questions. /usr/src/linux/Documentation.

Had you even bothered to consider the question you might have checked those files (1000+ on my o.s) and had you used grep you would have found no reference to PGE or 820 proc. You reply to nearly every post on this bulletin board with the same pedantic "read all the documentation". Have you? If you don't know the answer to a question don't offer this "help". And why should a lighting designer, or an small businessperson or just anybody who gets a linux distro be totally familiar with all the docs? If I have some information that could save someone some time I'd just give it to them. Its the difference between being open and being an obscurantist. So I repeat what are PGE extensions and what is 820 proc support?

Perhaps if you were paying for support and the time of the volunteers here, then you may have cause to criticize my suggestion.

Most do not know of the massive amount of documentation included with their distros with the kernel docs being one of them. With what I have read in the kernel documentation so far, I figured there should be something that would help you. I was wrong, so shoot me.

If you have no use for my input, then just ignore it. At least I tried and I haven't seen anyone else post the answer. Most here will not know what 820 proc support and PGE extensions are. Myself being one of them.

When you get to 6,300 posts and spend at least 3 hours a day here (not during work hours) attempting to help others, then complain all you want. That plus the 4 other LNO members I am helping right now privately through email.

It's jerks like you that make this all worthwhile.

8 posts and already the queen of LNO.

Is there not a Intel 820 motherboard chipset? It couldn't be that obvious could it?

Have a nice day my new found friend. Look forward to assisting you again in the future.

I found this article about paging extensions for the Pentium Pro processor. I think a lot of the theory may apply to the newer processors; if you want to know if you can safely enable PGE for your processor, I don't know - however, reading this may help:

Its a valid criticism. If you know something reveal it if you don't then don't. As for documentation... it isn't and never was complete and even if it was, most people, ie. the light designer, dispacther, small businessman etc.really don't have the time. That doesn't bother me I wouldn't expect that... Its an operating system not a way of life. So many people though have this guarded hubris regarding proficiecy with this o.s. and it still turns new people off. Whether I pay you or not the criticism remains and it is a public forum by the way. :p

I had figured that since you hadn't received a reply to your original question in the 5 hours since you had posted, I would at least try to help. Sorry if I spoiled your day.

Also I try to answer posts that have not had a single reply in quite a few hours, especially those that are new members. They may have had LNO recommended to them and when they receive no response, they may feel they're being ignored and will give up on using LNO. The answer I may not know, but suggesting to read the documentation or the NHF's to me is better than nothing at all. At least they feel someone has acknowledged their need for assistance. So if you feel you can help those out, then by all means do so.

Judging by the stack of thank-you emails I have received from LNO members, I must be doing something more than just telling them to RTFM.

6.300 posts and all I do is suggest they read the documentation? I wouldn't still be here if I did.

Some need a little push sometimes to learn to read the documentation. You won't get far in life (your career) if you always go to someone else for help. Your coworkers will just tell you to RTFM. Might as well get used to it early in life.

Sometimes I do suggest members read the documentation. I may not know the answer offhand though I do know it will most likely be in the docs. I could very well read them myself and post the answer, but I don't need any training to know it's always best to check the documentation first. Some need to learn.

Perhaps one day they will thank me for the little push.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. so just complain about me all you want. I'll just keep using whatever limited knowledge I have on Linux to try and help others here.

I'm looking forward to seeing your support here at LNO. Try spending 4 hours a day out of your own time and let me know your thoughts. We can all go on vacation while you take over. Well perhaps not as you really do not seem the type that's willing to help others.

I also see you are trying to give me the tongue. Sorry as I don't go that way.

Have a nice day and be careful getting down from that horse.

Well thank you anyway. It is a very linuxnerdy world to out there and you don't have to defend yourself. Perhaps I'm too caustic. Though I do think you give the rtfm advice a bit too much I should have put it in a nicer way. As to the rtfm, thing is, some people like myself do not work in a profession using computers and yeah we want all the best dope spoonfed with lotsa gravy. See i'm getting sarcastic again and I don't really mean to offend that much its just a jibe. By the way I think that article in Dr Dobbs is what I'm wondering about. And I'm pretty sure that 820 refers to the chipset but what is so wierd is why? when there are so many other horrible chipsets out there like the VIA 694 why have support for this? Anyhow I hope this snit is over, you called me a jerk so if your the vindictive sort take pleasure in that. And if not thanks anyway.
