I have installed RH 7.0 and it will not see the NIC that I have installed. I started with a 3Com 3c905b. It will not see it at all. I then tried a Linksys that I had laying around (I know hehehe). When I run ifconfig eth0 ip address it tells me that there is no such device. Does anyone have any suggestions as to another card I can use or possibly a way to configure either of these. I am new to Linux, but I am desperately trying to get away from Winblows. Thanx

if you want to give the 3com 3c509b card another try (i use these in linux all the time), read this (http://www.linuxnewbie.org/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=13&t=004362) thread, perhaps the suggestions in it will help you get the 3c509b card working
welcome to LNO!
and please try to post 1 question in only one forum, thanks! :)

There is a big difference between the 3c509 and the 3c905. If so, make sure you are loading the correct driver. I would suggest you run netconf and make sure that Basic Host Configuration shows 3c90x or 3c50x under the kernel module section. BTW, I have the same NIC card. Works fine under kernel 2.2.16. I can't get it working under kernel 2.4.4. Find Post here! (http://www.linuxnewbie.org/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=4&t=012055)
If I can help, let me know.

I have used the DOS utility to configure the 3c509 NIC for the base address and the interrupt. I have put an entry into etc/modules.conf and have rebooted the PC. I have tried to use multiple combinations of base address and IRQ. Whenever t boots, I continue to get tat there is an error initializing eth0. These are the only steps I have done. It seems as though I am missing something major as everybody talks about recompiling the kernel and whatnot.

I'm curious. What do you get if you type lsmod?
