I was wondering how fast a v3 3000 should render 3d stuff in linux. I have one and it seems terribly slow compared to windows and I barely play q3 on it, I have to turn the settings almost to fastest to get 30 or so fps. I can't really make maps in gtkradiant either, it's rather slow. DRI and OpenGL stuff just seems relatively slow. I run Debian sid, running kernel 2.2.19, XFree86 4.0.3. If anyone could help that'd be great.

Are you running with DRI support? If not, head over to dri.sourceforge.net (http://dri.sourceforge.net) and check it out. You should find the answers to all your 3d questions there. Also, this topic has been covered many times on this MB, so please do a search for 'voodoo' or 'dri' and see what you come up with. Luck!

I've got a V3-2000 and it would give me almost 60fps in Q3 with a tweaked config. UT would give consistent 45fps or higher in most maps - including CTF-Face, and that is without a tweaked config.
I think your problem is the X 4.03 - either because the latest DRI stuff is for 2.4.x kernels (and you have 2.2.19) or X 4 just plain sucks for us V3 owners - I haven't figured it out yet either, and I'd love to get Slack -current going.
Anyway, if you "downgrade" to X 335, you should notice a nice boost. www.linuxvoodoo.com (http://www.linuxvoodoo.com) has the drivers needed for 3.3.5.
Yes I'm using DRI bdl. Uhm, downgrade to XF 3.3.5? I remember I couldn't get it to work but maybe because I'm challenged, or I could upgrade to 2.4.x kernel? What'd you do to tweak it? Hmm...I'll look into it. Any other thoughts?

Frames seem significantly better when I was using kernel 2.4.4, hmm must be the kernel thing I guess.

DRI was backported to 2.2.19 along with some other things like USB, for users who were tired of waiting for 2.4.0, but still wanted to take advantage of these features. They were considered stable when backported.
Slack -current? Dunno, but that's exactly what I'm going to try to do. I've got most of my stuff downloaded (still have to download Kde2 and Qt), and I'm going to nuke a lot of things I already have installed to build them from scratch. I'll letcha know how it works out for me... Should be done by Thursday (being as I'm compiling a whole LOT of stuff, and have other work to do besides).
