I have a Pentium Pro (actually two, but I don't have a dually mobo) and I just got a really weird error message concerning the registers in the middle of a kernel compile. I have since lost the message, and I'm now running on my other PPro. It seemed really weird to me so I hit the power button (didn't worry too much since I have ReiserFS :) ). After switching processors, I could smell the one that was originally in the mobo and it was rather hot to the touch. Does this mean that it's almost practically fried? I'm not really sure what I could have done to it to fry it though. I'm sure that if I put it back in, it would mostly work, but I would prolly get a lot of similar error messages. If it's fried, I'm not going to be happy, because that cost me a pretty penny.

With a kernel compile being processor intensive, I would imagine that's the reason for the overheated cpu. Wouldn't think it would get to the point of emitting a strong smell.

Do you have a heatsink and fan secured properly on the processor? Did you try putting the processor back in to see if it still works?

No, I haven't tried putting the processor back in yet. I just put in the other processor and tried to compile the kernel again, and I got a different error message, I think. It didn't give me an error message concerning the registers this time. It just stopped compiling with a signal 11 to cc1 and the error message cpp0: output pipe has been closed. I have no idea what that means. Actually, I do remember one thing I might have done. A friend of mine gave me one of his mobos, and I tried it out, but couldn't get it to work. I had to put the PPros on a slotket because it was for Pentium IIs originally. I didn't realize that the jumper settings hadn't been changed for my slower PPros and started it up. The processors only ran at 133 instead of the 200 they're supposed to. I found the jumper settings and the settings were for 300. I set them back to 200 and the CPU speed readings were then correct, but it still wouldn't work. So I went back to my old mobo. I did not touch the jumper settings on the old mobo.

Also, I had to switch the memory. Not all of it is the same. They're all simm, some fast page, some edo, some other (but I'm not sure what). Could they be in the wrong order? How would I find out?

Sig11, kernel compile, memory,... that sounds familiar (and like a hardware problem indeed): http://www.bitwizard.nl/sig11
