Normal users get garbled sound

When I play sound as a normal user I get distorted sound from xmms and Unreal Tournament but when I run these apps as a root users the sound as perfect. Has anyone seen this ?

I'm using a VIA Apollo onboard soundcard and running Linux Mandrake 8.0.
