Drivers seem NICE so far, but anyone else notice the Nvidia logo when you boot into X. To recreate log out of X to a console and startx (or start KDM etc) you should see a full screen Nvidia logo while it switches to your WM.

Weird, I'll check this out when I download and compile them. I've noticed stuff like that before though, and it's usually just an old buffer that shows up (you know, usually you write to a back buffer and then flip it to the front, etc)

Yep, I've noticed the big Nvidia logo pop up. Another thing, sometimes when I log out and re-login back to X11, part of my desktop "background" flickers on for a split second before my window manager finishes loading.
It's my guess that the buffers in the card aren't being totally purged when logging out.
Does anybody else have that quirk?

Should I download the the rpm's for RedHat 7.1 or should I just install them by downloading the tarballs? I'm a newbie. Sorry!

Since you have RH 7.1, try the .rpm's first.
If you happen to have any previous .rpms of Nvidia's KERNEL and GLX .rpms' on your system, uninstall them with the -e flag:
rpm -e package.rpm. Do this at the console, NOT in X window mode!
Then install the new files with the -ivh flag.
I like the tarballs because for me, they are pretty much straightforward. Another reason why is because I'm running the latest 2.4 kernel (2.4.4) and use the SYSINCLUDE (to point to the newer kernel headers) option during the make install process.
In either case, read the documentation found on Nvidia's site , or if you download the tarballs, in the tarball(s) itself.

Don't be sorry about asking a newbie Q / being a newbie. We are here to help ya out!
I was once in your shoes and to this day, some stuff still boggles me!

Yeah, I've had that one show up for awhile now, kind of funny too becuase if my girlfriend changes her wallpaper I can see what it is for a few seconds when I log in.

All right, there comes newbie question part two. I downloaded the src rpm and etc, did everything to the letter fromt he instruction. X boots up ok, but I didn't see the BIG nvidia logo that ppl are talking about. I am using KDE btw.

I am still testing out linux, so I haven't really played any games on here. Is there any small game/diagnostic or demo I can download to see if the OpenGL is working?

thanks,

Nevermind . . . I made a backup of the XF86Config-4 and forgot to switch the new one in.

Disclaimer: very green

I just installed Mandrake 8.0 last night and would like to install the new nVidia drivers for my video card. I looked at every piece of info on this subject on the internet and cannot find an answer. I already downloaded the rpm files. My only question is what directory do I run the rpm command from and what directory do the rpm files have to be in when I run the rpm command to install the drivers?

blips, it doesn't matter where the RPMs are. Just change into the directory with them and do rpm -Uvh NVIDIA_....blah-long-filename.rpm (replacing with the appropriate filename of course)

Make sure you log in as root to do this though.

I installed the rpms for RH 7.1; it worked like it was supposed to. just read the installation instructions. there isn't much you have to do.

Err . . I've got a question about something I saw in my XFree86.0.log file. I am running RH7.1 with 2.4.4 kernel, but when I opened up the log file to see if there was any WW warning signals, I saw this line
Operating System: Linux 2.2.17-8smp i686 [ELF]

I assume that's an indication of which kernel I am running right?

I am trying to compile the new source files (First time trying to use them) The GLX compile goes okay but the during the kernel compile after about 10 lines of code, I get this error:

modprobe: Can't locate module NVdriver
make: [package-install] Error 255

Any ideas of how I can fix this?

I'm using Slack 7.1, Xfree86 4.0.2 and KDE 2.1.

Go to

Theres a good discussion there. More importantly, they've got Nvidia drivers precompiled for Mandrake 8.0.

Have any of the previous releases of the Nvidia Kernel compiled correctly on your system?
As a last resort, try re-installing the kernel headers, or if you have another kernel directory (already configured and depended, etc) do a make install SYSINCLUDE=/path/to/other/kernel/include
as root.

It compiled fine on my system and I am a Slacker as well :)

I remember reading a very indepth article on how to get rid of your old Mesa files, install XFree, qt, java, and of course Nvidia drivers but I can't remember where I read it. Does anyone have any idea where this article is?
