I am looking for a resource to help me determine which hardware components to use to assemble a linux compatible box. I have just discovered that there are issues with Debian and Ultra 66 HDs. I am currently looking at some rather tempting Matsonic 8308 MBs with onboard video, sound, modem and NIC and I am just green enough that I don't know whether onboard means software based as in Win(modem) or some other compatibility issue as related to onboard adapters

almost every distro has infomation on hardware compatibility on their respective web sites

i refer to the red hat hardware compatibility list (http://hardware.redhat.com/hcl/genpage2.cgi) frequently, often if a component is listed their, then it will work with most linux distribution, YMMV

good luck!! and welcome to LNO! :)

Onboard simply means integrated. Be sure there is some way of disabling everything - either thru bios or a jumper.

The hardware howto, while old, can be a good guide. You can find it at www.linuxdoc.org. (http://www.linuxdoc.org.) Also, if you are planning on running Debian, I think they have a hardware compatability list as well, it may be more up to date.

Also, you may want to look for some reviews of the mobo in question - I like www.motherboards.org, (http://www.motherboards.org,) www.planethardware.com, (http://www.planethardware.com,) and www.tomshardware.com. (http://www.tomshardware.com.)
