I m finnaly switching to Linux, but i want to try it out first?
I have an old 486dx2 with 4 megs of ram and 650 megs of hdd. I would like to install linux on this machine first. Can anyone suggest which linux would be appropriate for this machine?
a link to it would be even better ...

if at all possible, add more ram
see what type of ram that mobo takes, if it has open slots, then post for some cheap ram in the hardware trading forum
linux can be loaded onto that boxen, but it will be difficult and run like a slow dog, more ram will make it a usable CLI (command line interface) boxen
there is a post here (http://www.linuxnewbie.org/cgi-bin/ubbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=12&t=000420) describing how one our excellent LNO'ers loaded linux onto a Toshiba Satellite T1910 laptop - black and white screen, 486sx33 CPU, just under 4mb of ram, 300mb drive
read that post then decide what is best for you
good luck! and welcome to LNO! :)

Yup, you need more ram for sure, even to just install linux without going thru a major PITA.
I'd say 16mb at minimum for a good CLI machine, 32 for X. And quite frankly, X on a 486 is just gonna be slow, no matter what you do.
