I'm trying to find a 17"-19" monitor that supports at least 1280x1024, preferably 1600x1200, in linux and windows. My video card does up to 2048x1536 in 32 bit, so that's not a problem, I am just still running on a tiny 14.1 inch monitor, and looking for something new...
can anyone suggest a good monitor that isn't too pricy (i'd really like to stay under $250 with shipping, if shipping is needed)

One that works :D
Seriously, MAG! They are extremely reliable and excellent quality in the image department. I own a 1992 model of a 15" MAG, never been to the shop and still has a great picture! Although when I first turn it on in the morning she takes a little longer than usual... so I am sure she is on her way out... next year!
I had a 94 mag that kicked it a while back, lost all the blue.. I'm using a Viewsonic 4 (91' I think) now which does the high resolution of 800x600 but still looks fairly good considering.. If I were buying today it would be the PF790 no question, but that's a bit over your 250 budget..

I have a Viewsonic 17GS, I got it a couple years ago, works great. Viewsonics are generally expensive though.
Try an Optiquest, they are made by Viewsonic but are "lowerend".

I have had my Panasonic PanaSync/Pro PL70i (17" - shortneck) for about 2 1/2 years now. Excellent monitor with a really crispy display :D

i just bought a very nice 19" viewsonic, a little above your price range from newegg (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=manufactory&catalog=19&manufactory=1226)
they have some nice 17" for ~$200 shipped, and some decent 19" for ~$300 shipped
