i've recently thrown together my own computer using parts i'v scrumaged together using spare parts around my house and friends house, i just got the basics all put together, (p100, 32megs, 1.6g drive, and a floppy) And they work fine.
the problem arises with the CD drive i have, see the comp worked fine before, but when i put the cd drive in the computer, it won't boot! nothing works! if i unplug it, everything works again, what do i do!!!

A few of things to look at.
1. Are you using it as a primary slave or a secondary master and is the jumper set right.
You may want to try these two different configs and see if one works better than the other
2. Is the ribbon cable connected correctly. The red stripe is on the pin 1 side. Make sure that it is oriented correctly.
3. Finally, and this is a long shot, make sure that you are using the right end of the cable. I am sure that they are bi-directional but it seems to me that at one time I had a simular problem and just changing the cable around fixed it.
Hope this helps

i've already tried every combination for the ribon cable, as secondary master and primary slave,
when it's plugged in, the comp doesn't even look for it, it just won't turn on, the ONLY thing that runs is the fan for the power source, nothing else shows any sign of being alive, any chance it might be a BIOS problem, and if so, what can i do about it?

if you have another pc , try the cd in it
sounds like it might have a power short, dragging down one of the voltages
probably a dead cdrom drive :(

Or that the MB doesn't support EIDE? I'm just guessing though..... Try the CD ROM with Secondary master and HDD with primary only one drive each attached.

You've tried every combination of the ribbon cable, but have you verified the jumpers are set correctly for either master, slave or cable select?
Have you tried your bios to see if it detects the CD drive?

I had it two hours ago although mine was an HDD. The computer won't detect the master HDD. So I switch the cable from secondary to primary. I also made sure all the pins are tighly fitted into the cable as well and it detected right away... I think the two pins were off at the first time. It many help you out....
