I'm rather new to USB stuff (first time I've had a motherboard with it on), so I'm not sure if I'm doing everything right (I didn't think it'd be difficult). Anyway, my new motherboard (actually, it's used, but whatever...) doesn't have PS2 built in (I'd have to get some other thing for it), so I have to use the USB mouse, but it's not getting any power so Linux (v2.4.2) complains saying it won't accept the new address. I'm confused. Anyone know why it won't get any power?

PS Guess I should mention I have a 200Mhz PPro. I think it's a 440lx chipset, but I'll recheck that.

i have a feeling that if it was used, the USB ports are already dead :)
is it a optical mouse? is there anyway to tell if the ports are working?
in mandrake 7.2 there is a program called USB-view (or something like that) it will let you see if and what is attached to your computer.
on the optical mouse there are lights that light up as soon as the USB device is activated.

and there are always converters from USB to something elce :( if you need to do that.

I'm having the same problem on one omf my computers--

I have USB enabled in the bios
under both windows and linux I get nothing

No power, I'm using an optical mouse so I'd know if it was powered.

I'm thinking I'm just going to go by a pci 2 port usb card -- you can find 'em on ebay for around $20 so it's not that big a hit.

If anyone has any suggestions though...I'd sure try it out before spending money.

I just learned recently that it might be the version of the USB. The stock motherboards with Pentium Pros were some of the earliest versions of USB, and were unpowered, so I have a little bit of a problem. I would go to ebay to get a USB hub, but getting a PS2 port would be cheaper (besides I like PS2 better anyway.
